The hardest part of a new token launch isn't necessarily getting the announcement written. It's making sure people can actually discover information about the project when they start researching it.
Social posts reach the existing community. Paid ads create exposure. But a formal announcement can provide another reference point for someone evaluating the project.
I've been looking at CoinMarketCap press release distribution for that specific use case.
Web3 Newswire currently offers the placement for $100, with the product page also stating that a free OpenPR release is included.
For a project preparing for TGE, an exchange listing or major partnership, I think the question is less “Do we need PR?” and more “What information will someone find when they research us?”
That seems like a much more useful way to evaluate a PR campaign.
