Been looking at a few used cars lately and trying to narrow down the best used cars to buy without ending up with something that’s been abused or just neglected over the years. Budget isn’t massive, so I’m trying to be a bit more careful this time rather than rushing into it like I did with my last one.

I’ve noticed a few things that immediately put me off when viewing cars – like missing service history, weird gaps in MOT records, or sellers who can’t really explain what’s been done to it beyond “yeah it’s been serviced”. One car I saw had loads of advisories stacking up year after year on the DVLA MOT history check, but the owner said it was “nothing major” – which felt a bit dodge.

Also small things like mismatched tyres, sticky buttons inside, warning lights that “come and go”, or oil that looks like it hasn’t been changed in ages. Even paperwork matters more than I thought – if the logbook feels messy or there’s missing receipts for basic servicing, I tend to walk away now.

Just wondering what everyone else looks for as proper red flags? And has anyone actually bought something that looked rough but turned out to be fine? Trying to figure out where the line is between “needs a bit of TLC” and “this has been neglected its whole life” before I commit to anything else.
